Chinese New Year is here…

It’s 330am, and I just came home from supper with Huijing! We had teochew porridge at Upper Serangoon Road. I’m supposed to be tired, but why can’t I sleep? Is the insomnia back? Please take it away! I woke up at 1030am, played badminton for 2 hours at 12nn with Shuming, Huihui and Tony, with Qian Ling watching us. After that, we went to a nearby coffeeshop to eat and have idle banter before Huijing came to join us together with Benny as she had just returned from the US. After that, I went home and idled awhile before going to church and having a reunion dinner after that before coming home to watch some TV. Logically, I would have been sleepy and would have konked right into bed but then, I don’t think the body works logically anyway, so here I am blogging. I hardly sleepy in the day time nowadays, due to school/work or just not wanting to nap, but I still have many a sleepless nights. Anyway, I have 2 “suayness” personified stories to tell, so I shall share it with you all! For those who don’t know, suay is hokkien for unlucky!

The first suay story is about my boss. She related the story to me and I thought this kind of things only happens in TV/movies and the likes. Well, she was on the way to work on the MRT, and she was happily standing inside the MRT at a spot deemed fit for one person so stand. Ok, maybe not happily standing, but I like to exaggerate and make up things to add effect to the story, so sue me! After that, someone apparently came to squeeze into the spot, and she practically was smelling the person’s hair. As if that wasn’t bad enough, at one of the stops, someone was apparently in a rush to get down, and in the midst of that hurrying, her earphones got caught and got pulled out of her iPod. So there she was, thinking to herself what a bad day it was. Of course it didn’t end there, else why would I bother blogging about it? After she got down at City Hall MRT, her recently bought pair of shoes decided to break, and so she had to practically drag her feet to walk. So, she took a bus for one stop to a bus stop outside our workplace, but she was still stuck there, sitting at the bus stop not knowing what to do. “Aha!”, she thought to herself. “I’ll call Amos to bring my pair of slippers for me.” I guess the reason why she thought of me was because I am always earlier than her at work, and I really do mean always. Oh well, it isn’t her fault I go to work early to avoid some of the morning MRT traffic, and also to not rush myself. Anyways, she took out her handphone thinking how brilliant her plan was, but guess what? Well, her handphone battery was flat! Therefore, instead of dragging her feet to work, she decided to take off her shoes and walk in barefooted into the Supreme Court, making her way to our office on the cold unforgiving floor. Isn’t this Murphy’s Law at it’s finest? Well, after she related this to me, I told her she must have woken up at the wrong side of the bed, and told her to change the direction she wakes up from!

And now, on to story number 2, which isn’t quite as long and detailed, but definitely worth mentioning too. Huijing came back from the US, but apparently not everything followed her home. Firstly, on the second last day of her trip, which was for work, the car she and her colleagues used was broken into, and their laptops got stolen. She had just gotten a laptop upgrade from work recently, and seems to be quite contented with this new laptop. She even got a new mouse for it, which is a “Cute Pink Logitech Mouse”. But alas, it was not meant to be, and the laptop together with the mouse got stolen, together with 3 other laptops that they decide to leave in the car. This might not be the ultimate suayness, since it was their own doing for leaving the laptops in the car in the first place. Anyway, when she got back to Singapore, she heard her name being announced on the PA system. Apparently, her luggage did not follow her back, and it was still in the US since it did not “board” the plane with them. So there we have it, the shorter but definitely not less suay story.

So anyway, hopefully the Chinese New Year will chase everyone’s suayness away and bring luck onto everyone! It is afterall the year of the rat, and since I’m born in the year of the rat, whatever I say counts! Ok, not quite how it works, but who cares anyway? I wish everyone good luck in the year ahead and may you win big at the gambling table. Luckily for you all, I’m not really a big fan of gambling and so I’m willing to spare abit of my gambling luck, so to speak! Whether it’s luck or not, is up to you to decide anyway. Truth be told, I’m not really a big fan of CNY. I mean, it’s the same usual routine of bai nian-ing (visiting) and getting ang pows (red packets). It seems rather superficial to me, but hey, who am I to complain. At least we get to enjoy a super long weekend, and the break might help me get rid of my insomnia! I’ll probably do a few hours of bai nian-ing on the first few days, and spend the rest of the day at home. Sorry, but I’m not one who’s very enthusiastic about CNY and all.

Don’t touch my things!

Beware of profanities.

Nothing much…

School has started, but not in full swing yet. However, being the hardworking person that I am, I have been spending quite some time on my GEM1501 assignments, though Lab has not started. There’s a total of 28 assignments, and I have already finished 19 of them. However, I’m pretty much stuck on the 20th one, so there goes my chance of finishing them all :( I wanted to finish them all to lighten my load on Thursdays, which are the days I have lessons pretty much from 9 to 6, except for an hours’ break at 4pm. So, if any kind soul wants to help me with the assignment, you can check it out here. It’s done in javascript, so it should be quite easy, but the problem is not with the javascript programming, but rather with the logic or the thinking through of the problem :P

Didn’t go to work yesterday, because my boss fired me for one day! She was on MC on Monday and didn’t have time to prepare work for me. How ironic is that? I mean, I thought by my going to work I should lessen the workload for them, but since they need to prepare work for me, I guess I’m causing them more work?! Maybe I should work slower in the future, and prevent these situations from surfacing again! Yea, I’m considerate this way, so don’t think I’m making excuses when I work slowly okay?!

And, last but not least, someone tried to kill me today! I was on my way to school, and was going a road when this car wanted to turn right out of NUH carpark. So he inched out, and stopped. It’s important to emphasize that he stopped, since if he carried on I would have been forewarned that an idiot was going to turn out without caring about oncoming traffic and I would slow down. However, he stopped, so I mistook that for him being not an idiot and that he stopped cause he saw the oncoming traffic. Apparently, he was only checking the left side for traffic, and didn’t care to look to the right. I mean, who the f*** turns right and not check for traffic from the right. So there I was, thinking that he was not the idiot I thought he would be, and almost knocked into his car and flew. Thankfully, SSDC did teach me well, and I applied an emergency brake and slowed down, and managed to avoid him. And I didn’t even horn that guy too. I think I underuse my horn too much, as I hardly horn other road users when it is blatantly clear they are in the wrong. Oh well, at least if I did fly I would have been just outside NUH?

One more random thing to add: Raw broccoli is not nice. Somethings are nice when eaten raw, whereas for broccoli, let’s just say they taste better when cooked. Raw broccolis just taste too… green.

I Love NUS!

Gotta love NUS, for screwing me up over and over again. First it was CORS, but that was nothing. Now it’s the school administration, or the school of computing, or whoever makes decisions that tutorial slots can be changed at their whim or fancy. Yes, they decided to change the tutorial slots available for bidding of one of the modules to some other days. The worse thing was that I didn’t know about it until I decided to browse through the module info page to see my planned slot GONE. And the worser thing was that the only 2 days they had tutorials on were my working days. And the worsest thing was that I had to bid for another module at Round 3B (2nd last round of bidding). And the worserest thing was that I used up ALL my points for a module I could have probably gotten for less than 100 points in earlier rounds. Yes, all 4388 of my points, which leaves me with exactly… 0 points left in my programme account. Oh well, at least I take comfort in the fact that going to school for my Statistics lecture is a good cure for insomnia…

Anyway, I had my wisdom tooth extracted yesterday. All the horror stories I have heard, about the pain and the amount of money you need to spend. Well, I can say that my experience wasn’t that bad. Only paid $77, and the extraction took all of 10 minutes. So, I went to the dentist at around 4:20pm. Sat on the dental chair, and let the dentist do some routine checking. After she checked, she injected me with 2 injections of anaesthetic, and waited for around 5 minutes. After that, she said she would test first, and before I knew it my wisdom tooth was out. I guess I’m one of the luckier ones who don’t have wisdom teeth that grow at odd angles and where you need to cut your gem to get the tooth out.

Also, had my 9 to 6 marathon in school today. Would have had only 1 hour of break at 4pm, but my lab sessions have not started so I had 3 hours of break. Therefore, I went to the computer lab to do some surfing and chatting, and customizing my PortableApps FireFox. PortableApps is a cool idea which lets you install applications on your usb drive which you can bring to different computers to use. But I digress. I was spending most of my time reading http://419eater.com/, which is a site which does scambaiting. Basically it is about how they scam people, mostly those Princes from Nigeria, who send you emails that they want to give you 1 million. So it’s like giving them a taste of their own medicine. Anyway, on my way home, I saw something funny. Something was walking on the expressway pushing his bike in the opposite direction. He was probably pushing it to the exit before, possibly because no one told him that ERP changed and there was a gantry before the Upper Serangoon exit on CTE.

Some random visuals

Well, nothing much to blog about. Exams ended, work started, games most of the time. Story of my life. However, I can’t possibly pay $72 per year for webhosting and not blog about anything right? I mean, I know that no one ever reads my blog but I can still be hopeful and blog! Besides, I didn’t start this blog to link about 389024 other blogs and make everyone read it :)

So, since I have nothing to blog about, I’ll just post some random pictures I took.

The first is of the skyscrapers in Raffle Place. I was walking to work @ Singapore Academy of Law and saw this scene. It reminded me of Genting Highlands, so I took out my handphone to snap it.

The second is of a Mini Moo candy that my boss bought for me. She said she saw it at 7-11 and it reminded her of me. Hmm, I wonder why…

Anyway, anyone wants to buy me a digital camera for Christmas? :)
